It’s a….

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Just kidding! We don’t know. Though Joel tried to jump ship on me during our ultrasound and coax the technician into telling us what we are having!

Now for the real question…WHY has is taken me more than two weeks to post pics of my second child? No excuse!

Poor child - seems to have my nose. (Side note: Am I just a paranoid mom or does it look like an arm is growing out of baby’s cheek?!)

Look! An alien yawning!

The famous Schmidgall skiis!

When Ella was born the very first thing the doctor said was, “Wow, those are some BIG feet!” Poor girl!

Well, those are the first of MANY photos! Enjoy!

‘Ween!

We had a blast celebrating Halloween with our Ellie this year! She was a dragon and her best bud, Go-Go, was a knight! Watch out for his sword!

We started our evening with a little party at our church coffeehouse. Here are some of the church kids - so cute!

Cousin Mummer (Summer) was looking fancy too!

Best friends - Violet, Go-Go, and Ellie

Ella was NOT about the dragon head.

Her favorite activity - feeding Go-Go! He totally lets her too!

Go-Go was getting some serious smooches from her girls!

From the party, we went trick-or-treating of course. Whenever someone would open their door, the kids would want to go inside. They didn’t understand staying on the doorstep!

Ella was so cute. Daddy would prompt her to say Happy Halloween and she would shout, “Weeen!” and “Deet-do” (thank you)!

My little trick-or-treaters - dragon and Chuck Norris.

Happy “‘Ween!”

Pumpkin Goop

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Mimmy and Auntie Amy decided to introduce Ella to the art of pumpkin carving. She was into it, in theory. “Pop-in? Pop-in?”

But Auntie Amy tried to get her to touch that nasty pumpkin goop and her holiday spirit existed no more!

“Are you crazy? I’m not touching that!”

“Okay, fine, since you are so excited about this maybe I will just poke one seed or two.”

Mimmy finally convinced her by giving her the scooper! Good thinking!

“Alright, I will scoop, but no touching!”

After bathtime, we went to visit Mr. Pop-in, completed by Auntie Amy.

Make a pumpkin face Ellie!

She kept reminded us that the candle was “hot”. Each night, as went into the house, she would be sure to tell him “Ni-Night Pop-in!”

Chop Chop!

My wonderful mom came into town to watch Ella while we were in Thailand. Aunt Karen and Uncle Dan came too and even Auntie Amy! As a special gift, they turned Ella’s playroom into a grocery store. We are putting the finishing touches on it and will be sure to show it off! Thanks guys! We LOVE it!

When we got home, Amy and I took my mom for a special outing…to get her hair cut! My mom has had long hair since I was a baby! She has been ready to cut it for the longest time but the rest of us had our own attachments.

So this is how Mimmy has worn her hair most of my life…up and out of the way.

Oh yes, we must pause to note how Auntie Amy prepped Ellie for the eighties. I have been trying to keep her bangs out of her eyes as they grow but all she needs is some leg warmers and she is ready for Flashdance!

Mimmy’s final moments

Choppity chop! Doesn’t she look like Diane Keaton?!

Ta-da! Isn’t she GORGEOUS!

Thailand

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Okay, so I still need to post about our trip to Thailand. I really don’t know how to explain our experience. God truly broke our hearts. As background, we went to Bangkok, Thailand to work with my friend Paige and her church and also to work with a ministry called The Well, that ministers to women working in the sex industry. You can get a glimpse with this highlight video on our missions website (it is the one called Freed From Sex Slavery) - http://aoneeight.org/ Please don’t miss it!

Joel also spoke about our trip in his recent message. Don’t miss that either! http://theaterchurch.com/media/message/the-unchristian-elephant/

We never imagined how we would spend our week. During the day, we would work at the Well, teaching English and connecting with the women. These ladies came out of the bar scene (prostitution) just a short time ago. God has transformed their lives! They now live with the assurance that they are loved and have value and purpose!

We attempted to teach English! We had no clue!

In the evenings, we would go down to the bars and talk with women working there. We kept asking ourselves, “What are we DOING here?” It was horrible to see white western men buying these women. To talk with the women, we would have to order them a drink to buy their time. It was very intimidating at first but, we found we could easily make friends with the women.

Their stories are heartbreaking. Most of them have a similar story. They are from the northeast region of Thailand and from poor families. Many of them were left by husbands or boyfriends and must support their children. It is also the custom for the oldest daughter to provide for her family. Many of these women are working to pay off farming debt of their family or support younger siblings through school. They do not feel like they have any option.  They feel trapped.

Over the weekend, we were able to spend some time with my friend from college, Paige, who is now a missionary in Thailand. As emotionally exhausted as we were, it was great to spend some time with kids. Paige works at a church, teaching English. The church offers English classes as a way to reach out to their community.

These were the church staff kids - so funny!

As always, Joel was a hit with the kids. They would try to teach him Thai phrases and he would repeat the wrong on purpose!

Somehow the pastor’s son beat him arm wrestling!

On Sunday, Joel gave the message at the church. Awesome!

Some of our new friends we met at the bar outreaches came to service!

The Thai food was amazing! Paige took us to her favorite restaurant. Mmmm! Being pregnant, I had to take it easy because the food is much more spicy than in the US. It was hard to hold back!

Yep, that is a fish!

Thai people LOVE this - Papaya Salad (SUPER spicy)

After dinner, karaoke time!

It has always been on my life goal list to ride an elephant! We did it! It was amazing!

We got even friendlier than I could have imagined!

Our Thailand Team!

On our final night, we had a party with everyone at The Well. Please join us in praying for them!

We came back emotionally exhausted and are still trying to process everything.  We are excited to work in partnership with The Well and support their transformational work.  We are also praying for the friends we met, that God would continue to heal these women.

Costume Parade!

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Two mornings a week, Ellie attends our church playschool. It meets in the basement of our coffeehouse and is open to families in the community. This week, they had a costume parade! They trick-or-treated the church and coffeehouse staff.

Some of Ellie’s classmates during storytime

This was not her official costume, but since she got purple cupcake on her real costume at a party the day before, I decided to go with a backup until Halloween. Isn’t she a ferocious lion? She kept picking hair out of her mouth!

Daddy’s office is upstairs so Ellie got to trick-or-treat him! “Daddy it is me!”

Trick-or-treating Auntie Lora too!

Later that night, two families hosted a party for the class. Once Ella saw the M&Ms she refused to eat dinner. “Can-ny?” (Candy)

The kids got to decorate cupcakes. Ella said, “Mmmm, cake-cake!”

There was also a pinata!

Funny thing about toddlers…they don’t really get the concept of racing for candy. They all picked up one piece and wanted to open it. The floor looked like this until the parents got involved.

Violet decided to take a seat and go to work!
