Costume Party!
Tuesday, October 30th, 2007Sometimes I think I should write down the lessons I have learned as a new mom. I wasn’t clueless about babies when I had one of my own, but apparently there are some things you have to learn by trial and error. Let’s see: 1) It is entirely possible that you will never see a movie in the theater for a number of years. 2) Strollers are actually just as important for lugging all the now-necessary belongings as they are for pushing baby. 3) Yes, it is possible that you will go through that entire drawer of onesies in one week. 4) Always, ALWAYS hold your breath before opening the diaper pail to replace the bag.
I have a new one to add to my trial and error list. Even though homemade costumes are always adorable, there are benefits of picking up the factory-made costume off the rack. As background, I have always had creative, homemade costumes. My mom is one of those amazingly handy moms that could make my costume wishes come true. I was Thomas the Tank Engine, a Hershey’s kiss, Wonderwoman, Raggedy Anne. As a little kid, she even made me a pizza - with a red-checked napkin around my neck and my head sticking up through the cardboard pizza box (note to moms: orange silly string makes perfect cheese). Her opus was probably when I made the ultimate request: I wanted to be an octopus! She not only pulled it off…I must say I was impressive with my purple sweatsuit brought to life with polka-dotted tentacles. (For the record, I was in tenth grade. ha!)
This privilege has caused me to turn my nose up at those plastic, weird-mask costumes hanging in the holiday aisle of Target or Wal-Mart. The thought of showing up at a costume party or parade in the same costume as someone else, just devastating.
So, of course, there is no way that my baby girl could have a store-bought costume for her first-ever Halloween. We decided she would be a bumble bee! Of course, my mom had to make the cutest “no one will have one like it” frilly bumble bee costume.
So, for the lesson: For a baby under three, the zip-up warm and cuddly pajama-like costume is probably the way to go. SIGHHHHHHHHHHH
Ella’s friend Mille had a costume birthday party this weekend. Ella woke up from her nap late but we hurried over for the fun. It was raining and Ella was hungry…we were just a mess when we got there. It was cold and I hadn’t thought that Ella would need something warm for her legs. Since, we only had white tights, that is what she had to wear. We hadn’t thought to actually try the skirt on so the little suspenders didn’t fit! We didn’t have shoes yet so she had nothing on her feet. As the party went on, Ella kept yanking each piece of the costume off. Within 15 minutes, she was in a black shirt and yellow skirt - oh so creative huh?
Oh well, it was fun. And, thanks to Millie, we had a trial run before the big day! I sat with my little needle and thread last night making the necessary adjustments. I think we are ready to go now. Ella’s whole costume adds up to TEN pieces!
She and her best buds will be BUGS! Be on the lookout for a future post with Ella the Bumblebee, Giovanny the Spider, and Violet the Ladybug! Hopefully, we will also see Taylor the other Ladybug too! I can’t wait! And even though it is not a pajama suit, I might just let her sleep in it if she wants.
I finally got at least some of Ella’s costume on. All she wanted was her milk.

Millie the birthday girl…I mean, birthday chicken.
Ella and her playmate, David the Puppy
The fun began when we attempted to line the kids up for a photo. One by one they broke loose.
Even Violet was feeling overwhelmed!
Finally, we caught on to the trick - SNACKS! Ella, Taylor, Violet, Grace
